In previous posts I have mentioned a new ministry, The Essential Faith Project. I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce this project to you.
The Essential Faith Project exists to assist the Church in making, assessing and strengthening disciples of Jesus. We are not the Church–just a part of it–and we don’t want to replace it. We want to come alongside the Church–individual Christians and congregations–and do whatever we can to help them faithfully fulfill the mission the Lord gave us–to make disciples.
As I talk with ministers of different congregations, leaders of Christian ministries and Christians from different backgrounds I am impressed with the fact that the American Church is at a crossroads. The world wants us to focus on worldly success, which is defined almost entirely by one word: “Big”. More people, bigger buildings, big programs, big dollars…and always getting bigger. This has become so dominant that it is almost unquestioned by most people in churches.
But church leaders know better. More people in the seats–large attendance figures in mega churches–more buildings, programs, etc., doesn’t guarantee the church’s mission will be accomplished. In fact, studies show that the larger the church, the less effective it will be in making disciples.
So many church leaders are asking themselves if they should be doing things differently. This is hard for them, because the pressure to be “big” is enormous. The Essential Faith Project exists to encourage these leaders, and provide resources for them to assist them in making and strengthening disciples by providing written materials, providing video teaching segments, coaching and training for churches and church leaders, and The Spiritual Health Assessment app.
The Essential Faith Project is in its infancy. We are in the application process with the IRS for 501c3 status. We would appreciate your prayer support as we go through this process and launch the various aspects of this ministry.
