Every Sunday morning I arrive at the church building and encounter a thousand details—like every preacher does. Some time ago, I found that it helped me to slow myself down before arriving. So, I began going in a half hour earlier, and stopping at a Starbuck’s on the way. I get my hot chocolate and my low fat turkey bacon breakfast sandwich, pray, walk through my sermon notes, and find myself ready for the morning.
A few months ago, I encountered one of those times God’s sense of humor shines through events. I get off my bike and head for the door of Starbuck’s, and I am cut off—by a chicken. A real, clucking, feathery chicken. On the sidewalk at Starbuck’s. Now, that was strange, but the really funny thing is that this particular Starbuck’s shares a parking lot with a fast food restaurant. El Pollo Loco!
Sometimes we just don’t know the danger we are in. I wonder how many times we go through life, thinking we’ve got everything going for us, when we’re actually in grave danger (spiritually at least)? God protects us from so much, and most of the time we don’t even know it.
