Last month a friend (Thanks Scott!) turned me on to Playing For Change’s rendition of “Stand By Me”.
I am still captivated by it. I love the music, but that isn’t what grabbed me. What got me is how this producer found various musicians and singers from all over the world and recorded them in their own settings. Then he mixed them together, giving us a glimpse of them in the video, and adding each one to the mix one by one until we have a fantastic orchestration involving all these VERY DIFFERENT artists.
I’m reminded of how badly we need others who are different than we are in the body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 12:24 Paul says “But God has combined (NASB reads “composed”) the members of the body…” We aren’t put together randomly or by the design of one of us–and we definitely aren’t put together for one another’s convenience and preference. God put us together, and he did it as a composer, joining the very different sounds and rhythms of our lives. Young, old, and middle aged; contemplative and brash; humorous and dry; organizers and doers; feelers and thinkers; drivers and the laid back–we need one another, and we are increased by one another. But it is only when we follow him, and allow him to “mix” us that each of our idiosyncrasies and foibles can combine into beautiful music.
Make music to him today, and may the Great Composer join us together to make a beautiful sound for him!
